In this documentary directed by Michael Apted (GORILLAS IN THE MIST), nine soon-to-be-married American couples discuss their relationships, their decision to get married, and what marriage means to them. Each couple answers basic questions ... Full Descriptionabout how they met, how long they dated before they got engaged, what they do for a living, and which person in the relationship is more ambitious with his or her career. The answers to these questions reveal the challenges that they face, each of which is specific to their values, race, geographical location, financial situation, and family. Apted chooses a broad cross-section of America, treating several interracial marriages and exploring the familial approvals or disappointments that these pairings evoke. In addition, he looks at couples who are in different stages of their lives, some in their early 20s who were high school sweethearts, others who met in their early 30s once they were already living independently with established lives and careers. One young man has two children from previous relationships and marries a 21-year-old woman who agrees to be a mother to both. Another couple enters Weight Watchers together, convinced that their primary challenge will be controlling their eating habits. Across the board, MARRIED IN AMERICA presents interesting, compelling issues, conveyed with honesty and genuine hope by the couples interviewed. Combining straightforward interviews with footage of the couples on dates, spending time with their families, primping for the wedding, and at the actual ceremony, this film provides fascinating perspective on the cultural phenomenon of marriage in 21st Century America. Married in America review
$21.99 FRIENDS star David Schwimmer takes a rare turn in the director's chair for this British comedy, written by its principal actor, Simon Pegg (SHAUN OF THE DEAD), and THE STATE favorite Michael Ian Black. Pegg plays Dennis, a likeable loser who got cold feet on his wedding day and ran out on his bride-to-be, Libby (Thandie Newton). The action in RUN, FAT BOY, RUN takes place five years after this event. In the preceding years, Dennis has landed a job as a lowly security guard and Libby has given birth to a son, Jake (Matthew Fenton), who was conceived with Dennis before their break-up. Libby has also hooked up with a new man, the slimy but successful American businessman Whit (Hank Azaria). Dennis, who is still hung up on Libby, decides he must compete against Whit in the forthcoming London marathon to win back her affections. But, naturally, things don't quite go according to plan.
Pegg and Schwimmer's film is full of some wonderfully silly set pieces, and the supporting cast occasionally resembles a Who's Who of British comedy, with Dylan Moran ...

Married in America DVD
After nearly two decades of successful detours into mature thrillers (THE GIFT, A SIMPLE PLAN) and superhero blockbusters (the Spider-Man series), director Sam Raimi returns--full tilt--to his scrappy horror roots with DRAG ME TO HELL. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, a soft-spoken Southern girl with a good heart, a PhD-toting boyfriend (Justin Long), and a job as a loan officer at a bank just outside of Los Angeles. When evicting a vile and negligent old woman named Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) seems to be the only way to secure an important promotion, Christine pushes her moral flexibility about as far as it can go (not very far at all) only to dearly pay the price as the recipient of a rather nasty curse. The next three days of Christine’s life amount to an unimaginable endurance test in which she is subject to physical and psychological torture while a terrifying demon draws ever closer to take her to hell, where she would burn for eternity.
Raimi manages to keep the feverish awfulness of DRAG ME's ...

$16.75 For some, the state of America's finances holds about as much interest as watching brainiacs labor over the New York Times crossword puzzle, but that's why WORDPLAY director Patrick Creadon was the perfect person to helm this documentary. Alternately entertaining, informative, and disheartening, I.O.U.S.A. is a timely and essential film that explores the U.S. fiscal crisis, focusing primarily on the country's high level of international debt. But this nonpartisan documentary doesn't merely blame the Bush administration; I.O.U.S.A. chronicles America's financial history, starting with the 18th century and discussing the country's trend of living beyond its means, both in wartime and in peace.
For those who had trouble with high school economics, I.O.U.S.A. pleads its case with more charts and graphs than the S.A.T.s. But the documentary avoids an overload of graphics and numbers, focusing on the human efforts of former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker as he discusses the country's financial issues with Americans across the country. I.O.U.S.A. also features interviews with Alan Greenspan, Ron Paul, and the always charismatic Warren Buffett. The film spends most of its time explaining the dire situation, ...
