(4 Customer Reviews)
Although Hole would eventually score major hits with more pop-accessible material (1994's LIVE THROUGH THIS and 1998's CELEBRITY SKIN), the band's early work, such as its 1991 debut, PRETTY ON THE INSIDE, was more raw and punk- and hardcore-based. Along with L7, Babes in Toyland, and Bikini Kill, Hole was part of the early-'90s "riot grrrl" movement, which merged abrasive music with feminist lyrics and served as a much-needed antidote to the party-hearty late-'80s glam metal scene. Co-produced by Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon and alternative knob twirler Don Fleming, PRETTY ON THE INSIDE was a venomous and cacophonous debut.
Although Courtney Love would eventually pen some of alternative rock's best-known songs of the '90s ("Doll Parts," "Celebrity Skin," etc.), she was still honing her craft on PRETTY ON THE INSIDE. Songs such as "Teenage Whore" were snarling confrontational rants, while such other frenzy-filled compositions as "Garbage Man," "Good Sister/Bad Sister," and the title track easily kept the rage at a boiling point. PRETTY ON THE INSIDE would be the one and only album to feature Hole's original lineup, which consisted of Love on vocals/guitar, Eric Erlandson on guitar, Jill Emery on bass, and Caroline Rue on drums.
Recorded at Musicbox Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Hole: Courtney Love (vocals, guitar); Eric Erlandson (guitar); Jill Emery (bass); Caroline Rue (drums).
Spin (12/91) - Ranked #20 in Spin's list of the 20 Best Albums Of 1991. Q (10/95, p.138) - 3 Stars - Good - "...this rock music is a genuinely uninhibited kind. From the opening `Teenage Whore' onwards, the howling confrontation doesn't let up. It's loud, ugly and deliberately shocking..." Alternative Press (7/95, pp.95-96) - Rated #74 in AP's list of the `Top 99 Of '85-'95' - "...Speaking the truth about the irrevocable and easily-earned title of bad girl, Love works in extremes and wears that scarlet letter when she feels like it, and when she doesn't she rips it off, never neglecting melody and language as the real medium for her message..." Melody Maker (12/91) - Ranked #13 in Melody Maker's list of the top 30 albums of 1991 - "...a relentlessly apposite hardcore grind.." classic punk rock HoLe This record is about a shade behind "Live Through This",in terms of favorites of mine. It's not as melodic as LTT,but any fan of Hole's early stuff would have to listen to this record."Teenage Whore"gets you right from the start, while "Babydoll"has a real raw, sexual aura to it.Other notable songs are "Berry","Loaded", "Garbadge Man",and the title track,"Pretty on the Inside/Clouds".Some tracks are hard to listen to,but that's the beauty of it.I also recommend "My Body the Hand Grenade",since that has several "Pretty on the Inside"era songs, not to mention several remakes of classic Hole songs from later on in their career. This cd is a must have for any fan of Hole, and of punk music in general. Pretty On The Inside songs
$10.79 LIVE THROUGH THIS would have been an important record even without the heartbreaking overtones surrounding Courtney Love, Kurt Cobain and their daughter Frances Bean. In light of those events, however, there is a poignant resonance to Hole's songs that amplifies, and in some cases transcends their original meaning.
With her husky growl and simmering sing-song delivery, Courtney Love at times suggests a female Johnny Rotten. Sugar and spice and all things nice she is not, if a song like "Doll Parts" is any indication ("Someday you will ache like I ache"). She sounds like someone who was denied a real childhood, and life's ...

$10.15 A few years after the matter, even the album cover appears vaguely symbolic: an innocent babe, braving the hazards, lunging for the seductive prize at the end of a hook. Few would've given good odds that the youngster would actually be able to snatch the green, swim back to shore, and laugh triumphantly in the fisherman's face; and history has made fools of those who thought it couldn't be done. NEVERMIND not only gave Nirvana the prize the band had ...

| | Best Of The Shangri-Las CD (1996) Import
Pretty On The Inside CD music
$9.95 BEST OF collects some of the most memorable recordings by the girl-group the Shangri-Las. "Leader of the Pack," "Give Him a Big Kiss," and "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)" are here, among others.
Proof in the adage "you get what you pay for" is evident on this 17-song anthology from the U.K.-based Pegasus Budget Entertainment label. Borderline enthusiasts will inevitably find what they are seeking. However, because The Best of the Shangri-Las (2004) was issued primarily in foreign (read: outside North American) markets -- some might consider the compendium's omissions its fatal flaw. One can't refer to the girl group pop music trend of the early 1960s and not mention the two sets of Queens, NY siblings who made up the Shangri-Las. Mary Weiss and Betty Weiss teamed up with their high school classmates (and twins) Marge Ganser and Mary Anne Ganser and actually began singing on demo records for producer Shadow Morton while still attending classes. It was through his Brill Building connections that the young ladies were signed to Red-Bird Records -- owned and operated by none other than Jerry Leiber of Leiber and Stoller fame. Under Morton's direction, the vocalists would unleash half-a-dozen American Top 40 entries. The biggies "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)," "Leader of the Pack," "Give Him a Great Big Kiss," "Right Now Not Later," "He Cried" and "Past, Present & Future" are accounted for. Yet, absent are the secondary hits "Give Us Your Blessing," "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" and "Long Live Our Love" -- all of which reached the Top 40 singles survey. Even with room to spare, they have been passed over in favor of a handful of comparatively subpar deep album tracks, ...
