All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. MEET THE TEMPTATIONS is several years and a whole world away from The Temptations' later incarnation as the socially conscious face of Motown with such hits such as "Ball ... Full Descriptionof Confusion" and "Cloud Nine." First released in 1964, most of the songs included here are fairly innocuous if impeccably performed '60s pop R&B, some of them ("May I Have This Dance," "Isn't She Pretty") carrying the faint but unmistakable whiff of '50s doo-wop.
The inclusion of the group's later hit "The Way You Do the Things You Do" in this subsequent stereo version highlights how far the group and Motown had come in available material and technical ability in just two years. Most of the thrill here is hearing voices such as those of Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin that would soon become synonymous with the golden age of R&B in their earliest incarnations, transmuting even the most unpromising material into something exceptional.
Includes liner notes by Harry Weinger.
The Temptations: David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin.
Producers: Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Norman Whitfield, Andre Williams, William "Micky" Stevenson.

Meet The Temptations album
$7.55 CLOUD NINE found the Temptations trading in the matching suits, string-sweetened arrangements, and songs about innocent romance that typified their smooth pop of the mid-1960s for groovy threads, socially conscious lyrics, and driving, rhythmic song structures. The title track is all one needs to know that Motown's golden boys have "turned on" in the best way possible. With its open feel (the group's usual singalong chorus formula is replaced by percussion-heavy jams and vocal interchanges) and lyrics about economic hardship and drugs, "Cloud Nine" signaled that the times were a-changin' indeed.
The group's take on "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" reinvents the song via a funky, reggae-touched ...

In 1965 the Temptations were gaining serious momentum as one of Motown's most popular acts. Thanks partly to the assistance of Smokey Robinson, who contributed six songs, TEMPTIN' TEMPTATIONS kept that momentum rolling. In many ways, in fact, TEMPTIN' TEMPTATIONS, the group's third album for Motown, is a showcase for Robinson. He wrote and produced some bright, melodically spot-on tunes-- the elegantly sad ...

The Temptations cut this live album in 1966 at the height of their first wave of popularity (the band would experience success in another incarnation in the late '60s and early '70s). On this 17-track set, the Temps marry their trademark smooth crooning and superb harmonies with a blazing, in-concert energy. Still in their original line-up here, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Paul and Otis Williams, and Melvin Franklin take turns singing lead and lending background support, showcasing the group's vocal versatility and panache.
The set is comprised of the Temps' earliest hits, including two of Smokey Robinson's finest songs, the loping, romantic "My Girl" and ...

Meet The Temptations album
$15.75 Falling somewhere between a ghost- and tribute-band the Mingus Big Band has been a staple at The Time CafT in Manhattan for more than a decade. As 1998's QUE VIVA MINGUS focused on the late bassist/composer's Latin-inspired works, TONIGHT AT NOONà shows us that he also had a way with love. That's not to say that these are lush ballads full of strings; they carry all the intensity of his other works.
The long history of this ensemble allows for some of the most intimately performed versions since the originals were recorded. "Eclipse," taken here as a samba, features the Charles Mingus Orchestra in it's first recording and includes of all things a playful bassoon solo. Never a stranger to exotic instrumentation, Mingus would have loved the mysterious timbres created by the combination of bass clarinet, French horn, and acoustic guitar. "Invisible Lady" is enhanced with lyrics and vocals from musical chameleon Elvis Costello. The highlight here is arguably the brilliant performance of "Black Saint & Sinner Lady." The classic tune has rarely if ever been attempted ...

Meet The Temptations Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great early work from some soon-to-be icons This album is just a teaser of the great things that were to come for the guys. There are great leads from Paul & Eddie. My favorites are: I Want A Love I Can See, The Way You Do The Things You Do, Just Let Me Know, Paradise, Dream Come True, Slow Down Heart, Check Yourself, & Your Wonderful Love. History Every Temptation fans should own this. Some of their do wop, gospel and blues influences can be clearly heard on this historic album. There's lots of great Paul Williams singing on this one. Submitted by Paul (Howell, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
History that sounds great. Even with 1964 recording equipment this album sounds great. You just can't keep that great singing from coming through. The temps show thier do wop and rock and roll roots on this album in addition to thier sweet, sweet harmonies and stunning vocals. Anything lacking polish is made up for it with talent. Great As the Temptations first album, it is greatly unappreciated. There are some amazing songs on this CD that have never got the attention they deserve. Well worth whatever price it sells for.
