Once you've resigned your conscience to the fact that none of the musicians involved will receive any royalties from your purchase, you can get down to some serious listening. This album presents Mingus' mid-60s ensemble in its prime. The grooves throughout are loose yet driving, with Mingus and drummer Dannie Richmond marching in lock-step. Mingus leads the way, taking the first solo in "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress," and unaccompanied solos in "Fables Of Faubus" and the title tune. The latter two explore many tempos and textures from straight-ahead to free jazz and considerable dissonance in their nearly 54 combined minutes. Poor health would force Mingus into semi-retirement shortly after this recording was made, so perhaps we should be thanking the bootleggers with providing us with another example of his genius, despite their clandestine ways.

Charles Mingus was a composer in the vein of Ellington, exploring timbre as well as tonality, and exploiting the strengths of his sidemen, a virtuoso bassist, and, the object of much bootlegging, particularly in Europe. GOODBYE PORK PIE HAT is one of those bootlegs. The only clue to the set's origins given is that it was recorded in Europe ca. 1964.

Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute); Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone); Johnny Coles (trumpet); Jaki Byard (piano); Danny Richmond (drums).

Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica. With the help of such Chicago heavy-hitters as pianist Otis Spann, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Fred Below, Walter's own group displayed ferocious chemistry and instrumental prowess. Naturally, Walter's vocals and exceptional harp are at the fore here. Whether on signature tunes ("Juke"), slow burners ("Mean Old World"), or classic rockers ("Boom, Boom Out Goes the Light"), this is old-school electric blues ...

A SPACE IN TIME was Ten Years After's biggest commercial success. The reasons are pretty obvious; Alvin Lee's songwriting had improved markedly and there was far more stylistic variety than on their previous albums. The big hit here was "I'd Love to Change the World," with its catchy acoustic guitar hook and the immortal opening line, "Everywhere is freaks and hairies." Other ...

Savoy Brown Step Further CD  (1969)

CD $6.49  5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
With Kim Simmonds and Chris Youlden combining their talents in Savoy Brown's strongest configuration, 1969's A Step Further kept the band in the blues-rock spotlight after the release of their successful Blue Matter album. While A Step Further may not be as strong as the band's former release, all five tracks do a good job at maintaining their spirited blues shuffle. Plenty of horn work snuggles up to Simmonds' guitar playing and Youlden's singing is especially hearty on "Made up My Mind" and "I'm Tired." The first four tracks are bona fide Brown movers, but they can't compete with the 20-plus minutes of "Savoy Brown Boogie," one of the group's best examples of their guitar playing prowess and a wonderful finale to the album. This lineup saw the release of Raw Sienna before Lonesome Dave Peverett ...

The fiddle is an instrument that has a long and fascinating history. For centuries, it has played a major role in the traditional Scandinavian folk of Sweden and Norway as well as the Celtic traditions of Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany. Scandinavian music was a major influence on Celtic music, when Scandinavian Vikings invaded the British Isles many centuries ago, they left their mark musically. And when Irish and Scottish immigrants moved to the U.S., they brought their fiddles with them and helped pave the way for bluegrass and country. A native of Ireland, Manus McGuire is well aware of the fiddle's rich history and made his mark playing the instrument with the Irish groups Moving Cloud and Buttons & Bows. Saffron and Blue, which was recorded in February 2000, is his first solo album. Essentially, this charming collection of instrumental jigs, reels, airs, and waltzes falls into the Irish/Celtic category. But McGuire also has a strong appreciation of Scotland's contributions to Celtic music, and Scottish influences are prominent on parts of the album. The Irishman is also a big admirer of French-Canadian/Quebecois fiddle playing -- he lived in Eastern ...
