In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader. KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa films, expertly portrays the leading role(s), almost always filled in the past by Toshirô Mifune. KAGEMUSHA also features the final screen appearance of longtime Kurosawa actor, Takashi Shimura. In order to help the film get an international release, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas served as executive producers. Director Akira Kurosawa sumptuously reconstructs the splendor of feaudal Japan and the pageantry of war. The soaring historical epic is also a somber meditation on the nature of power. The special edition double-disc set includes new, restored high-definition transfer enhanced for widescreen TVs, audio commentary by Kurosawa scholar Stephen Prince, documentary on the making of the film, new video interviews with executive producers Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas, documentary, booklet of new essays by scholars and biographical sketches, new and improved English subtitle translation, and more. Tatsuya Nakadai and Tsutomu Yamazaki star.

DVD $59.89
This ambitious, black-and-white, seven-hour Hungarian film from idiosyncratic auteur Bela Tarr follows the inhabitants of a run-down Hungarian village still reeling from the collapse of Communism. Based on Laszlo Karsznahorkai's novel and filmed over a period of two years, the critically acclaimed epic takes the time to explore each character's unique point of view. Hailed by critics as landmark cinema, SATANTANGO transcends all genres, surpasses all styles. The story revolves around an abandoned agricultural collective, where a handful of lost and lonely characters eke out a living until a charismatic con man arrives to shake things up. However, the richness of the film comes from the director's singular vision. A master of melancholy, and a virtuoso of the long take and immaculate composition, he has been rightly called "one of the most innovative and accomplished auteurs in filmmaking today"(MoMA). The DVD premiere of SATANTANGO is a new digital transfer supervised by Bela Tarr himself.

This disc received the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Opera Recording." A short time after his arrival in America, Igor Stravinsky decided he wanted to write a full-length opera in English. Drawing his inspiration from 18th century English artist William Hogarth's etchings, Stravinsky began to search for a librettist. He met with noted English poet W.H. Auden and in one week's time the two had conceived of almost every detail of the opera's plot. The quicksilver wit of the libretto is brilliantly brought to life by Stravinsky's music which is, at times, both heart meltingly tender and bitterly acerbic. Stravinsky, one of the great neo-classicists, drew inspiration from the Da Ponte operas of Mozart and even went so far as to write Mozartean recitatives for the work. Tenor Ian Bostridge sings the title role of Tom Rakewell with clarity and precision. Deborah York's lovely pristine soprano is perfectly suited to the role of Anne Trulove and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter is hilarious as Baba the Turk. Bryn Terfel's dark bass voice and wry wit all but steal the show as the devilish Nick Shadow. John Eliot Gardiner leads with energy and revels in the score's quirky rhythms.
