Cat Stevens bounced back from the lackluster Numbers with an album of pop/rock songs that brought his usual rhythmic folk-rock into contemporary style with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, a snappy Dave Kershenbaum production, and lots of synthesizers. Most of the songs were unusually lightweight, but the autobiographical "(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star" explored Stevens' ambivalence about being in the music business, an attitude that would find him dropping out and finding religion after one more album. In the meantime, Izitso produced a final Top 40 hit in "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard" and a singles-chart entry in the instrumental "Was Dog a Doughnut." As a result, Stevens returned to the Top Ten LPs list with a ninth straight gold album, his last. ~ William Ruhlmann Izitso Music | List Price | $10.98 (You save $2.19) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Rock/Pop, Singer/Songwriter | | Label | A & M | | Orig Year | 1977 | | All Time Sales Rank | 12614 | | CD Universe Part number | 1574856 | | Catalog number | 546891 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Feb 13, 2001 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Personnel | Barry Beckett - electric guitar David Hood - bass Cat Stevens - acoustic guitar, guitar, classical guitar, bouzouki, harpsichord, Fender Rhodes piano, piano, ARP synthesizers, drums, percussion Pete Carr - guitar Barry Morgan - drums Carla Benson Evette Benton Jean Roussel - flute, electric piano, organ, ARP synthesizer, string synthesizer, vibraphone Barbara Ingram - vocals Bill Berg

$14.55 Blues singer Walter Brown had a vocal delivery somewhere between Rubberlegs Williams and Joe Turner. Although his alcoholism and addiction to both narcotics and amphetamines resulted in a break with Jay McShann in 1943, by 1947 Brown was back in the recording studio accompanied by the Jay McShann Quartet -- with Seeward Evans on tenor sax, bassist Percy Gabriel, and legendary Kansas City drummer Jesse Price -- waxing four sides for the Mercury label in Houston, TX. Interestingly, Brown's comparatively sensitive voicings on "Just Thinkin'" sound a lot like McShann's own beautiful vocal style that was destined to flourish decades later. Brown's next four sessions took place in Kansas City, where Dave Dexter of Capitol Records sought to cash ...

| | Michelle Shocked Threesome CDs (2005) Limited Edition; Digipak

$25.69 MICHELLE SHOCKEDThere are three things you need to know about Michelle Shocked. Number one, she possesses an outsized ambition; number two, she abhors unfinished business; and number three, she has a thing for the number three. These factors play into Shocked’s latest artistic explosion, a trilogy of albums recorded simultaneously during a sustained burst of overdriven creativity in December and January, each one hewing to a particular stylistic concept…sort of (let’s allow the girl some poetic license here). Just as audaciously, she’s releasing the three albums simultaneously. Most artists wouldn’t even conceive of such an undertaking, let alone see it through – but Michelle Shocked isn’t most artists. Dancing to the beat of her own wild heart and soul, she nimbly negotiates the tightrope that stretches between here and heaven, working without a net.The trilogy is hardly a new concept to this single-minded artist. After all, she started her recording career with three stylistically distinct albums in Short Sharp Shocked (1988), Captain Swing (1989) and Arkansas Traveler (1992). Together, this set defined her wide-open milieu, on that encompassed rock, country, blues, folk, swing and all manner of indigenous American music. If she’d had her way, Shocked would’ve made and released these three records all at once, but that sort of over-arching ambition is seen as folly in the world of major labeldom. In time, Shocked’s pioneering vision and the conventional music business proved themselves akin to oil and water, and these days she can do what she damn well ...
