Given his associations with Def Jux's El-P and his 10-plus years as a presence in the rap underground, Murs has plenty of cred to his name. His 2006 release, MURRAY'S REVENGE, is one of his most assured, and finds the MC balancing between his experimental tendencies and more mainstream hip-hop values. With help from producer 9th Wonder, Murs lays down rhymes that address topics that, while standard for rap, are treated with an intelligence and sense of wit not often found in the mainstream.

U.K. house producer Matthew Herbert is perhaps most noted for his playful approach to digital sampling technology. Composing his songs using sounds as varied as kitchen utensils and human skin, Herbert has bridged the worlds of conceptual and populist art unlike any other musical artist. His 2006 effort, SCALE is an audacious pop album of quixotic proportions. Steeped in lush harmonies reminiscent of 1950s vocal jazz, Herbert and cohort Dani Siciliano wrap bitter political messages inside candy-coated lyrical double entendres. Underscoring a commitment to politics on a global scale, Herbert provides real-world context by sampling objects such as: coffins, gas pumps, and an RAF Tornado bomber. Such highbrow conceptual hijinks might leave the impression that SCALE is dry art-school fodder--but make no mistake, this is pure pop music. And while much of SCALE is worthy of filling more discerning DJ crates, it's the songs with a more experimental take on texture and tone that indicate it's scope beyond sweaty dance floors. On the dark ambient track "Just Once", muffled voices and shortwave static create an air of foreboding--suggesting a scarier world just outside the dancehall.
Given Scale's use of sounds that come from associable objects like fuel pumps and coffins, as well as its maker's unflagging devotion to recording methods of greater (and almost Jackass-like) extremes, it would be easy to prejudge the album as dry and joyless. One poor drummer was recorded under water, in a hot air balloon, and in a car driving 100 miles an hour -- hey, for kicks next time, why not record his finger cymbals as he grapples a shark wearing a Dick Cheney mask? Thankfully, if all you care about is the listenability of the results, all the contextual and conceptual stuff matters not a lick. Herbert is more upset about the state of the planet than ever, especially when it comes to the actions and inactions of Bush and Blair, but he has also made it known that he aimed to make an enjoyable, richly musical album full of melodies and ...
