But they're better known as the bands that preceded and eventually morphed into Electric Wizard, the ensemble that dominated if not out-and-out created the "stoner metal" genre. This compilation gathers some of the best tracks from these two bands, and the extreme, bass-heavy sound; fuzzed-out guitars; and Alastair Crowley-cum-Led Zep lyrics provide apt foreshadowing for what was to come. The is music for Black Masses and dark maguses. Eternal, Thy Grief Eternal, and Lord of Putrefaction: D&D characters? Possibly. But they're better known as the bands that preceded and eventually morphed into Electric Wizard, the ensemble that dominated if not out-and-out created the "stoner metal" genre. This compilation gathers some of the best tracks from these two bands, and the extreme, bass-heavy sound; fuzzed-out guitars; and Alastair Crowley-cum-Led Zep lyrics provide apt foreshadowing for what was to come. This is music for Black Masses and dark magi. Although it won't hold much interest for non-Electric Wizard fanatics, this singular compilation provides a fascinating glimpse into the fast-changing interests and fortunes of a struggling underground band -- not to mention one which had to move backwards in order to move forward. Confused? By this we mean stylistically, since the earliest group incarnation represented here, Lord of Putrefaction, took the crusty death metal sound of their 1991 split release with Mortal Remains from contemporary influences such as Carcass, Bolt Thrower, and Celtic Frost; while the transitional Thy Grief Eternal clearly looked towards Cathedral or Paradise Lost for the gothic-tinged, epic death/doom of their 1992 demos; and, finally, the frugally named Eternal sought refuge in the pure, '70s inspired doom of Black Sabbath for their 1993 Lucifer's Children EP. Make sense now? To complicate matters a little further (or perhaps in attempt to correct the band's historical de-evolution), Pre-Electric Wizard sequences its ten tracks in reverse chronological order (Eternal, Thy Grief Eternal, Lord of Putrefaction), but, whatever their presentation, the one common trait shared by all ...
