Collectables' Goodbye Cruel World is a good, budget-priced ten-track collection combining teen idol James Darren's romantic ballads and up-tempo pop numbers recorded for Colpix in the early '60s. These are the original versions of such modest hits as "Conscience," "Gidget," "Mary's Little Lamb" and the 1961 Top Ten hits "Goodbye Cruel World" and "Her Royal Majesty." ~ Al Campbell Goodbye Cruel World Music James Darren Goodbye Cruel World Songs Goodbye Cruel World Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) good CD this CD is excellant. there are two well known tracks on it. they cover James Darin most popular hits. Not just Goodbye Cruel World. I have to admit, my all time favourite instrumental track is Because They're Young by Duane Eddy, I'd seen from the UK chart listings that James Darren recorded a vocal version of this, only a minor hit, but very interesting all the same. So, what is the rest of the CD about, only 10 tracks in total, but all of them very pleasant mid sixties pop. An ideal addition to my collection. | | Vandals Fear Of A Punk Planet CD (1990) Reissued
Goodbye Cruel World music CDs
$17.69 Fear of a Punk Planet is possibly the definitive Vandals release. There are the covers of corny pop songs ("Summer Lovin'" from the Grease soundtrack and the Beach Boys' "Kokomo") played at maximum velocity and with sneering, snotty vocals. There are the supremely silly lyrics ("Join Us for Pong," "The Day Farrah Fawcett Died"). There are the amped-up, speedy songs. What puts the Vandals over is, believe it or not, the musicianship. Unlike most other punk outfits, the band, especially ace drummer Josh Freese, is tight and focused. They even attempt Iron Maiden-style metal on "Small Wonder" and pull it off. Even if the constant juvenile ...
| | Rabih Abou-Khalil Arabian Waltz CD (1996)
Goodbye Cruel World songs
$13.35 Arabian Waltz is the pinnacle of Rabih Abou-Khalil's achievement as a composer and arranger. It is a sublime fusion of jazz, Middle Eastern traditional music, and Western classical. In addition to Abou-Khalil on oud (the Arabic lute), Michel Godard on the tuba and the serpent (the tuba's antique kinsman), and Nabil Khaiat on frame drums, the album also features the Balanescu String Quartet instead of the usual trumpet or sax. The presence of the Balanescu might seem to pose a dilemma for the composer: traditional Middle Eastern music uses no harmony but a string quartet is all about harmony. Abou-Khalil achieves a compromise by generally writing the string parts in unison (or in octaves), in effect using the quartet as a single voice, but also letting the quartet split up to play parts in unison with the other instruments or to provide ornamentation. Without surrendering jazziness at all, the presence of the strings makes possible a wondrous atmosphere, almost as if one is listening to the soundtrack of a classy movie set in Beirut or Damascus during the '40s. This feeling is greatest on "Dreams of a Dying City" with its brooding tuba and cello motifs and grave, repeated rhythms. "The Pain After" starts with an impressive tuba solo that ...

| | Peter Mulvey Kitchen Radio CD (2004)
Goodbye Cruel World CD music
$13.75 After taking a break from the burden of songwriting with 2003's Ten Thousand Mornings, Peter Mulvey returns in 2004 with Kitchen Radio, an album filled with new compositions. As with Eliza Gilkyson's recent release, Land of Milk and Honey, Mulvey has serious things on his mind but he's not about to spell them out in any obvious way. In "29 Cent Head," it's evident that all isn't well in the land of the free, home of the brave. But even while certain problems are stated -- all elections are the same, priests are perverts, and no one cares -- the song's setup and elliptical images are too artful to reveal its overall purpose ("...When you look behind the curtain to where the puppetmaster sat/There's just an empty chair/And the strings are lying flat"). Mulvey takes an equally oblique approach to songs about relationships. "Falling" seems to be about a guy meeting a girl who is able to break down his defenses, despite his demons that tell him to hold back. But the story is sketched so vaguely, it's really hard to tell who's doing what for whom. Depending on one's point of view, this method of writing is either more poetic than the typical protest and love song, or frustratingly obscure. Even the listener wishing for greater clarity will nonetheless appreciate the simple arrangements and clean production of Kitchen Radio, highlighted by acoustic and electric guitars and vacillating between tasteful folk and rock. Kitchen Radio is a well-wrought effort with a nicely honed sound that will please anyone who enjoys thoughtful songwriting. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When he is home, Peter Mulvey begins his day as many people do, with the news of the day pouring out of the radio on his kitchen counter. Where that leads him, though, is the real story here. With Kitchen Radio, Mulvey's third album for Signature Sounds (his eighth overall and his first album of original material in four years - see Discography below), he has put the songwriting solidly front and center, and the result is a moving, deft portrait of a place where ...
