Only Everything, David Sanborn's second album for Decca, feels like part two of his debut for the label, 2008's Here & Gone. That set was a tribute to Ray Charles and Hank Crawford -- the alto saxophonist who played with Charles in the '50s and early '60s, and influenced Sanborn tremendously. That set featured loads of vocals and tightly arranged tunes that were indicative of the performances of Charles' bands. Only Everything delves into more of that territory, but this time, Sanborn reflects more heavily on Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman, another legendary Charles ace from roughly the same period. The charts here allow for more soloing and offer a looser, more intimate, spontaneous feel. It contains only two vocal appearances: one by Joss Stone on a punchy "Let the Good Times Roll," and one by James Taylor in a unique interpretation of "Hallelujah I Love Her So." There are two different bands here -- one a septet with a horn section, the other an organ trio. Steve Gadd handles all the drum chores here, with Joey DeFrancesco as organist on all cuts. The larger group includes saxophonists Bob Malach and Frank Basile, with Teddy Kadleck on trumpet, and trombonist Mike Davis. The only original here is the title cut, a ballad for trio, while everything else is R&B-drenched, soul-inflected jazz that may have come from a somewhat distant era yet feels contemporary whether played in septet or trio ...

When drummer Tony Williams died of a heart attack on February 23, 1997, at the relatively young age of 51, it was a tremendous loss for straight-ahead post-bop and hard bop as well as for fusion. Williams had numerous acoustic jazz credentials (including his contributions to Miles Davis' legendary mid-`60s quartet), and his band Lifetime was one of the most important fusion outfits of the `70s. The late drummer's fusion side is what electric guitarist Allan Holdsworth, electric bassist Jimmy Haslip (of Yellowjackets fame), keyboardist Alan Pasqua and drummer Chad Wackerman pay tribute to on Blues for Tony, an excellent two-CD set that was recorded live in 2007. Forming a quartet, the improvisers remember Williams not by trying to sound like a carbon copy of Lifetime, but rather, by celebrating the overall spirit of Williams' fusion output. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants.
The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicizing the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral flourishes. The surreal patina of three flutes and harp, high muted trumpets and woodwinds, and subterranean trombones, French horns and tuba that define one of the main variations on the theme, is a majestic foil for Davis' expressive tones.

Guitarist/vocalist Thomson is from Canada, and while her six-string work is reflective of greats like Wes Montgomery, one can't help but think she's been influenced by fellow Canadian Ed Bickert. The same clean, flowing, distinct single lines that inform Thomson's style are very much a part of Bickert's as well. Vocally, she's quite comparable to Rebecca Kilgore, a sweet, solid voice that rarely takes a chance to scat or extrapolate a lyric. Longtime Bickert running mate Don Thompson is here, but on piano instead of bass, and he proves to be a force. Drummer Barry Elmes, bassist Pat Collins, and tenor saxophonist John Nugent provide Thomson with good people to bounce ideas off of. "The Best Things in Life (Are Free)" has an easy swing, while the subtle waltz "Think of Monk" has none of the expected piano angularities. Thompson's piano shines exquisitely on the inquisitive "Oh Moon, Oh Star," the well-worn standard ballad "All the Way," and the slight bossa of "September."
