For the uninitiated, Senor Coconut is none other than the electronica artist Atom Heart (real name Uwe Schmidt), dancing his way into the Latin subconscious. EL BAILE ALEMAN consists of Latin covers of Kraftwerk tunes--computer music interpreted as faux acoustic music. Schmidt programmed the whole album (with the exception of some choice vocal parts), transposing Kraftwerk byte-for-byte into a sound field of maracas, congas, shakers, and vibes-a-go-go. Even though the music is played straight, the air of whimsy and sheer ingeniousness is palpable.
"Tour De France" is redone as a hyper-speed merengue, "Homecomputer" as a tarantella, while Schmidt's version of "Showroom Dummies" is positively baroque, like Tito Puente drowning in acid. EL BAILE ALEMAN is a feast for the senses, a smorgasbord of sonic samba and a coup de grace of calliopes and circus shrieks. Muy excelente!
Upon the American arrival of El Baile Alemán, the first record from Señor Coconut y su Conjunto, listeners were forced to contemplate the notion that a traditional Latin group from South America had organized a tribute album to Germany's favorite futurists, Kraftwerk. Even given the comparatively close ties between the two regions ever since World War II, it's a ludicrous proposition and turns out to be the work of Frankfurt native Uwe Schmidt, who has recorded his Atom Heart material in Chile since 1997. El Baile Alemán is that rare humor LP that succeeds on its musical merits as well. Beginning with a short vocal intro on which Señor Coconut himself introduces the record with appropriately comic English, El Baile Aleman presents remarkably faithful covers of Kraftwerk classics ("Showroom Dummies," "Trans Europe Express," "The Robots," "Autobahn," "Tour de France") with the stark percussion and effects of the originals replaced by just slightly less rigid Latin rhythm presets. Latin music can be a surprisingly precise genre of music, and Schmidt walks the verge between Latin and techno with a special genius that would be practically impossible for other electronic producers. Far more than just a novelty record (though many will see it that way), El Baile Alemán accomplishes an excellent Latin-electronic fusion. ~ John Bush

Alex Clements; so many adjectives can be used to describe the many facets of this talented, creative, well-rounded Canadian jazz pianist and composer. Clements is an internationally recognized artist, performing in the United States, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Morocco, and Cyprus. One of Clements’ highest accomplishments is an Alberta Achievement Award, which was presented to him by the Government of Alberta.However, this is only the beginning of his accomplishments; Clements holds a Master's degree in Jazz Performance from McGill University and a Bachelor's degree in Arranging from Berklee College of Music. He also completed two associateship performance diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music and Mount Royal College Conservatory of Music, where he was awarded a gold medal and scholarship.In the past fifteen years, Clements has received numerous scholarships and awards from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, The Canada Council, The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Record (FACTOR), McGill University (Margaret Houlding Memorial Prize), Berklee College of Music (Achievement Scholarships), and the AlbertaFoundation for the Arts (Arts Study Grants).Clements has performed at numerous jazz festivals including, the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Kissimmee Jazz Festival. He competed twice in the Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Competition in Paris; the competition consisted of 59 top jazz pianists from around the world.Clements maintains an active performing career in jazz, organizing his own concerts as well as directing and working as a sideman at many venues across the US. He recently performed a concert featuring his original compositions and held a master class at Abilene Christian University in Texas. \'down to sleep\' is shalloboi\'s fifth record. while it sounds heavily processed and overdubbed to death a lot of the effects that are heard on it were achieved in a relatively straightforward way mainly with the use of natural room sounds, mic placement and volume. all of the vocal effects were achieved in a natural way and utilize natural reverbs courtesy of an abandoned stairwell in the apartment building where the band lives and several spaces in the congress theater. the process took about two and a half years and the tracklist was whittled down from a set of 25 songs that were recorded, some songs going through several different versions. three of the songs were written when tyler ritter (guitar, vocals, piano, loops, etc., etc.) was only 18 years old. this album also saw the band expanding the drum sound more and using more fully developed string arrangements and glockenspiel melodies juxtaposed against the droning fullness of the guitar sound, the nearly symphonic loops and the hazy feel of the vocals.\"From the first second upon playing you get locked into this dark brooding ambience.
